Upcoming FiCycle Teacher Trainings

Our second 2-day professional development training for teachers will be held Wednesday, August 25th and Thursday, August 26th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST both days. This session is open to anyone interested in taking an in depth look into the curriculum. The training aims to prepare attendees for teaching the FiCycle high school algebra and statistics course that also covers the key components of personal finance. In addition reviewing the course curriculum, attendees will work through a series of activities that cover fundamental financial concepts as applications of mathematics.

Educators attending the training will learn about:

  • Successfully navigating your financial life cycle―the fundamental concept for meeting financial needs across your lifetime―and why it requires a focus on building wealth, rather than cash alone.
  • The mathematics of compound interest―exponents, logarithms and series―which enable you to transfer wealth across phases of your life through borrowing and investing and, as a result, meet financial needs over the course of a lifetime.
  • The mutually reinforcing nature of algebra and finance, and why it’s beneficial to learn these subjects together; learning about each one builds conceptual understanding in the other.
  • How the use of spreadsheets in the classroom can allow students to engage in high level mathematics and problem solving while also serving as a vehicle to help them internalize important mathematical concepts such as recursion, composition of functions and more.

We welcome school leaders, parents, and community members to attend our trainings alongside teachers. Trainings are held virtually so that we can continue our work together while physically distanced. Here you can see what part of the online training will look like. If you have any questions, please contact the FiCycle team.
